Donald Giordano, a resident of Upper Moreland for 31 years, will take home this year's Man of the Year Award from the Republican Association of Upper Moreland Township.

The association will host its annual Lincoln Day Dinner Dance on Friday at the Blair Mill Inn, 3855 Blair Mill Road.

Giordano, 72, is a retired construction inspector manager for the Department of General Services of Pennsylvania. Active in the Republican Party since 1958, Giordano, has served as a committeeman in Philadelphia and Upper Moreland Township and currently represents Ward 3 for the Upper Moreland Republican Association. He served with the Marines during the Korean War, is past commander of the VFW Post 661 and past president of the men's club at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Horsham.

"I've slowed down a little bit," Giordano said, adding he is still active at the church as an usher.

He also is a member of the American Legion Post 10, Sons of Italy Lodge 2271 and a lifetime member of the Bricklayer's Local 1.

The award probably results from his reputation, and his work of raising money for Republican candidates at various events, which the board and chairman have seen in the past, Giordano said.

"I know because the chairman and the people on the board can always depend on me getting people to buy tickets," he said.

Joe Morgan, president of the Upper Moreland Township Republican Association, said the executive board interviews each year to find the Man of the Year, and there was no contest in selecting Giordano.

"Don is one of those Happy-go-lucky guys," he said. "You don't see him getting angry, he's not one of those people that fly off the handle."

Moreover, Giordano was not selected solely for his contributions while actively involved with area Republican activities, but also for his other work, including the church and organizations such as the VFW, Morgan said.

"He's one that believes in his country, and that's a big thing," he said.

The love for country and friends holds true in a conversation with Giordano, who said the people of Upper Moreland are what he likes best about where he lives.

Giordano said he is a string advocate of the Upper Moreland school system as well, noting his three children and two of seven grandchildren have graduated from Upper Moreland High School.

"The schooling was a big help to me," he said.

Since retiring 11 years ago, Giordano said he stays busy as best he can. He is an active member with the Upper Moreland advisory planning agency and enjoys the monthly meetings.

"That keeps you going, and keeps you with something to think about," he said.

Giordano summed up the recognition with a bit of advice he picked up somewhere he failed to recall, but always tells family and friends, including his wife of 47 years, Angeline.

"I'm fortunate," he said. "If you treat people the way you want to be treated, you'll always have a lot of friends."

Giordano will receive a plaque at the event Friday, and citations from Rep. Roy Cornell R-152, and Sen. Stewart Greenleaf, R-12, who will also be present, Morgan said.
